    H1 OKRs Are In

I was directly responsible for a few OKRs, one of which was a major win:

Through process improvements and statistical analysis, our ability to accurately predict how much work teach team could accomplish was drastically improved.

I tracked our 4-sprint trailing mean and variance, capacity adjusted, for each team. We reduced variance by 40% through various means:
    1. Stopped over-stuffing sprints (the easy one). We targeted sprints at 1 standard deviation below mean so obviously our variance would go down. However, we did not reduce our mean! This means that our average over-production made up for our reduction in target. We were pushing ahead most sprints as a result.
    2. Focused on completion of tickets. Reducing our WIP enabled improved focus and more consistent delivery.

    Vendor Renewal Win

Another vender renewal win. This time a 30% discount for a mission-critical product. This also kicked off a discussion that could potentially give up to a total 70% reduction in costs.

    Engineering Organization Information Architecture Refresh

Kicked off the engineering org information architecture refresh. This project adds owners to all of our internal knowledge base pages. We also started the restructuring of the knowledge layout to make it easier to reach the critical data needed to build effectively.

    2024H1 Sprint Metrics Analysis

I worked with Parker Bannister to analyze the performance of the engineering org over H1 to date. We analyzed sprint-over-sprint velocity mean and deviations. (Yes, this should be a log-normal distribution. @ me if you have a good refresher course on log-normal analysis.) We also analyzed story cycle time versus point estimate.

    Sprint Analysis
    1. Collected sprint data
    2. Calculated effective team capacity for each sprint due to vacation and holidays
    3. Calculated capacity-adjusted velocity
    4. Analyzed planned versus unplanned tickets
    5. Calculated mean, median and standard deviation

    Story Estimate Analysis
    1. Collected story data for each team
    2. Calculated cycle time durations for each story
    3. For each estimate value (Fibonacci values 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13) cycle time quartiles were calculated

    Results
We were able to make recommendations for each team based on results, primarily what point total each team should target in order to predictably complete assigned work. We also eliminated 3-pointers on the Data team due to the data showing that 3 and 5-point stories were statistically indistinguishable.

    Particle Health Recognizes Team Leads

I've created the role definition for Team Leads at Particle. Team Lead is an empowered engineer overseeing the short-term activities of the team. Team lead is a role where an engineer can showcase their non-technical capabilities in service of creating an strong, independent team.

    Rollout of New Career Ladder

We refreshed the engineering career ladder at Particle. As part of this I presented to the engineering team during the all-company January onsite.

This new career ladder is more domain-agnostic than the old ladder, more aligned to company values, and more cleanly described.

Data Science at Particle is Now a Kanban Team

I ran through the STATIK analysis for the Data Science team. We identified the workflow, SLAs and system by which the Data Science team works. This enables the team to be both reactive to ad-hoc requests as well as to predictably contribute to new data product creation at Particle.
